From the New York Times

As President-elect Barack Obama works to fill the final positions in his Cabinet, officials familiar with the decision said that a leading contender for Secretary of Transportation is Representative Ray LaHood, who would become a second Republican to join Mr. Obama's team.

One of the tasks awaiting the transportation secretary is helping to implement the vast public works projects that Mr. Obama has proposed to jumpstart the economy. A member of the Appropriations Committee, Mr. LaHood has experience overseeing - and spending money on - such projects.

Mr. LaHood, who is retiring this year after seven terms in Congress, has represented Peoria and the surrounding area in downstate Illinois. Known for moderate views, Mr. LaHood belonged to the Republican Main Street Partnership, but first rose to prominence when he presided over the House impeachment vote against President Bill Clinton.

Yes, I am in IL-18, LaHood's district.  Yes, he is a moderate Republican.  But, well, lets face it: when it comes to intelligence and imagination he isn't even in the same galaxy as Obama's pick for Secretary of Energy:  Steven Chu (Nobel Laureate in physics)

Yes, LaHood has a reputation for being honest, non corrupt, and at times he has broken with the Republican party (Freedom to Read act, voted against one of Bush's tax cuts, against the first versions of the Patriot Act, etc.)

But he represents mediocrity rather than out of this world excellence; I don't see him as being someone who comes up with fresh, imaginative solutions to complex problems.

I sure hope that this is a rumor.

Or, am I being too harsh?

Costello (0.00 / 0)
I would have preferred Costello who is a champion of light rail.
My only question is does this make it less or more likely he will run for the Senate in 2010?
Doesn't this kind of give him a higher profile for such a run?
Of course he would have to leave the cabinet to run so maybe he is less likely to throw his hat in the ring.

...Cong. Costello?  I think not.

Note to President-elect Obama:  Just to remind you sir that there are 49 other states to find qualified candidates, even for the least glamorous Cabinet post (ever since a good deal of was once the Transportation Secretary's responsibility was shifted to Homeland Security).

LaHood is a Republican (0.00 / 0)
Costello is a Dem, last I checked, and I live in I-12.

The selection of LaHood fulfills a campaign promise.

Maybe one of these days he'll run out of Republicans (4.00 / 3)
and be forced to appoint an actual progressive to his cabinet.

Not a chance. (4.00 / 2)
Not while Emanuel's there, anyway.

Can you imagine finding a progressive Republican?  But a conservative Democrats are a time a dozen.

Ask the "Club for Growth"... (0.00 / 0)
they have a list of 'progressive' Republicans they plan to run against.

Under a Sec. Lahood i can see a greater push for privatization of public transportation projects from road and bridge repair to totally private profiteering of all public transportation. They'll do to transportation what BlackWater and Halliburton have done to the military. And LaHood will be the thin edge of the wedge.

Just consider how strapped many states are right now, add the "use it or loose it" mandate that will accompany Fed. funds. Governors and legislatures are going to listen to anyone who can help supply the State's matching funds. The Carlyle Group (Bush inc.) has already been using AEI and Heritage to lobby for greater Public/Private partnerships in infrastructure repair.

Did you note that Obama is president (0.00 / 0)
The Sec does what the president asks him to do, not the other way around.  It's really not that hard folks.

Good pick (0.00 / 0)
Politically speaking. LaHood will help deflect some of the inevitable Republican criticism of these massive spending projects. And it's not the job of a Cabinet Secretary to come up with fresh, imaginative solutions to complex problems. In fact, someone too in love with his own ideas could easily become a liability.
