I have to admit that I haven't paid that much attention to the IL-18 U. S. Representative race.  It is usually a lock for the Republicans, and Aaron Schock seemed to be a popular choice.

Perhaps I dismissed our chances too soon.

It turns out that the Republicans are bringing in The Decider for a private fundraiser for Mr. Schock!

ollie :: IL-18: Bush to come to Peoria for Schock
From the Peoria Journal Star:

PEORIA -

Though his approval rating is one of the lowest of all U.S. presidents, George Bush is expected to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for 18th Congressional District candidate Aaron Schock when he appears at a fundraiser in the Peoria area later this month.

Bush, who last was in Peoria in January 2007 to visit Caterpillar Inc., will visit this time for the sole benefit of Schock. He'll be at a $500 per head fundraiser at a yet-to-be determined private residence on July 25, Schock said.

"It's humbling that out of 435 congressional races that (Bush) is willing to take time to help me and that I'm on his radar screen," said Schock, currently a state House representative.

With Illinois U.S. Sen. Barack Obama at the top of the ballot in the November general election, current 18th District seat holder Ray LaHood, R-Peoria, said Republicans - particularly in Illinois - need all the help they can get.

"Aaron and other Republicans need to make sure that voters know they have to go down the ticket and cross over and vote. It's going to take money to persuade people that these folks are on the ballot," LaHood said. "It's no secret that President Bush is very low in the polls, but I believe based on his visit here 18 months ago, central Illinois has a very good feeling about the president."

Evidently they feel that Colleen Callahan has a chance else they wouldn't be wasting their time.

I guess that I am going to be busy this fall. :-)

Update
I've created this little blog widget but would replace it if someone comes up with something better.

ollie, though it's been awhile.

this is significant... (0.00 / 0)
bush has done no open appearances for republican congressional candidates that i know of, and has only done fundraisers for a handful of republican members of congress...

"We did not come to fear the future. We came here to shape it." - President Obama, Sept 9, 2009

If Callahan has the resources to exploit this (0.00 / 0)
It could be the most expensive fundraiser of all time. I'm imagining mailers with Bush and Schock pictured together, maybe even TV ads....

Aaron "Douchebag" Schock (R) is a smarmy little windbag running for the Congressional seat being vacated by Ray Lahood (R), from Central IL who resided over the Clinton impeachment trial.

Yesterday it was announced that President Bush is coming to Peoria to do a fundraiser for Schock. $500 for dinner and $5,000 to get your picture taken with the president.
If you get a chance, read the comments...hilarious! [...]

Important district (0.00 / 0)
This should have been a much more competitive race. Callahan got a late start but its still winnable.

Aaron Schock is a far-right wing extremist running in a politically moderate district. They vote Republican, but they aren't talk radio crazy Republicans like Schock.

Schock must be feeling a little heat (0.00 / 0)
Normally at this stage of a Schock campaign, he usually has a press release detailing his double-digit lead from a commissioned survey.  It will be interesting to see how close the fund raising numbers are next week.  Rumor has it the reason why Schock has "been unavailable for comment" the past couple of weeks was that he was was in D.C. hat in hand asking for money because his local sources were balking at repeated calls asking for more.

The Callahan campaign has been picking up momentum the past few weeks.  Colleen was well received at the Tremont Turkey Festival, she had the fundraiser at the UAW hall in E. Peoria, and with the hiring of Terry Towery she has had a better relationship with members of the Media.

P.S. Ollie, sorry about my harshness a couple of months ago at  another online forum.   Best Wishes!

Hey Brian (0.00 / 0)
No problem; I didn't think that you were that harsh, and you did get me to think. :-)

Schock a "right wing extremist".... (0.00 / 0)
Schock is about as REAL a "far right wing" extremist as Jerry Weller or Ray LaHood, (and McCain) are, they are politicians, and saw a way to keep getting elected - the "Bush Base" - so that's how they mostly vote and that's who they cater to. They are hypocrites - but aren't most politicians? Schock is young republican turk, like Jason Briscoe, the young republican mayor of Minooka IL. who is making news in today's Chi Trib.

So what's the difference between a pol who is a REAL far right wing extremist and one who just talks and votes that way? I dunno. Except one is a hypocrite, at least.
