I am probably not the one to write this diary since I know there are people out there who were much closer to him than me.  I first met Pat when he was the campaign manager for Dan Kotowski's state senate campaign and I got to know him better during the Mark Pera campaign where he also served as campaign manager.  I also remember Pat because, as Wheeling Township Democratic Committeeman, he was one of the few to speak out against the appointment of Todd Stroger to replace John Stroger as the Democratic nominee for Cook County Board President.

I was completely shocked this morning to stumble across the article announcing his death. As the article says, he was in good health and never talked about any health problems.  In fact, I am still thinking maybe the article is some sort of hideous mistake, but I guess that's not possible.

Some quotes from the article are below. If you knew Pat, please use this diary as an opportunity to share your stories.  If you didn't, give your loved ones an extra hug today.

Sandra_Verthein :: Patrick Botterman dies of heart attack
From the Daily Herald:

Harper College trustee and Wheeling Township Democrat Committeeman Patrick Botterman died of a massive heart attack Monday.

Botterman, 44, a lifelong Arlington Heights resident, leaves behind a long resume of Cook County politicking. He ran campaigns for Melissa Bean, Chicago 32nd Ward Alderman Scott Waguespack, Dan Kotowski's state Senate run in Park Ridge, and Republican Wheeling Township Supervisor Michael B. Schroeder when he ran for but lost the Arlington Heights village president seat to Arlene Mulder in 1993.

"I think Patrick Botterman is the single most influential political mind in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago," friend and Democratic strategist Kevin Lampe, 46, of Chicago said.

[...]

Lampe said Botterman never mentioned anything about any health problems and that he was in great shape.

"He was riding his bike and he was eating healthy," he said.

Botterman was always very passionate about politics, Lampe said.

"He just wanted people to be treated better, and it made him mad when people weren't treated right," Lampe said.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately available.

That's sad news. I recognize the name, although I don't think I could put a face on it.

I didn't know him (4.00 / 1)
but I have heard about so much of the good that he did.

thecapitolfaxblog has a rememberence thread running:

Mark Brown's take... (4.00 / 2)
His particular delight in life was sticking it to the Cook County Democratic Machine, rarely a profitable career path for a Cook County Democrat such as himself.

Accordingly, Botterman's candidates lost more elections than they won, and to make ends meet between races, he confided to friends that he occasionally took jobs on the loading dock of a package delivery service.

But even before he dropped dead of an apparent heart attack Monday afternoon on a downtown sidewalk, the 44-year-old Botterman had established himself as something of a legend in local independent politics

Just got back in town (0.00 / 0)
I just got back in town and saw this on the blog.  I knew Pat just a little because we would travel in the same circles in the Northwest suburbs.  He worked hard for many candidates including my dentist.
He tried hard to help energize the Democrats in Northern reaches of Cook County.  He often attended the Democratic Club of Elk Grove Village in an effort to help them organize and move forward.
He will be missed by many.
