Unbelievable.

Lipinski, Kirk seek accord on Iraq
Bipartisan tack touts Study Group proposals
By Jim Tankersley | Washington Bureau

[...] Republican Mark Kirk and Democrat Dan Lipinski, will join forces Monday to discuss the "path forward" in Iraq with a focus on the long-shelved recommendations of the Iraq Study Group [...] including political benchmarks for the Iraqi government and a goal, but no requirement, of U.S. troop withdrawals beginning next year. Lipinski is one of the bill's four original sponsors. [...]

I guess Lipinski's 0% score from Planned Parenthood, and his votes with the Republicans on stem-cell research, the Terri Schivo case, Iraq war funding, and the FISA bill weren't enough.  He decided to *really* give them a hand by giving cover to Mark Kirk, and at the same making sure we stay in Iraq as long as possible.

I know there has been some discussion on this blog as to if, and how much, we should be jumping in on these races.  Well, consider me officially jumped in.  Last Thursday my group, Northside DFA, endorsed Mark Pera for Lipinski's seat, and we will be out canvassing on Saturday for him.  Though we haven't done an official vote on Dan Seals yet, many of our group members are already out working on his behalf, and we are organizing a canvass for him next Sunday.  If you live on Chicago's north side and want to carpool with us, you can sign up and get more details at http://www.dfalink.c...

And if you live elsewhere, call up these campaigns and ask what you can do to help. Enough is enough.

I don't know what the canvas plan (3.00 / 1)
is for IL-03 and further I don't have a great amount of canvassing experience but...

If I were sending progressives from other parts of blue Chicagoland to IL-03 I wouldn't have them just go door to door. Instead, I would have them searching for potential political activists who could quickly grasp progressive messages, that is if they weren't already attuned them. I would have them do something like this:

Send them to targeted pct A. Go to random house. Ask whoever answers "who in their neighborhood pays most attention to politics" especially Democratic politics?" Or ask if they know someone in the surrounding blocks who supported Dean in 2004. Find a person like that and see if they can be recruited as the pct. captain. When someone is found then our volunteer moves to targeted pct B and repeats the process. Therein after "our volunteer" trains and manages the people found and replaces as needed.

Experienced volunteers should be recruiting, managing and training not canvassing. And further they should be recruiting for our progressive organizations as well as the particular candidate.

But maybe that's what is done and I'm just way out of the loop these days.

I don't know what the plan is either at this point, that is one thing I am hoping to find out when I go down there on Saturday.  And though I totally agree with you on what you are saying, when I have tried to do that type of thing before (trying to recruit someone from within the precinct to work that precinct) I have not had much success with it, though when it has worked it has worked very, very well.  In fact, two volunteers recruited that way during the Cegelis campaign ended up starting their own local DFA group -- which was very cool.

And I think that we should definitly suggest a strategy like this to them.

Are you game to go down to this event on Saturday?  If so email me, because I am looking for a ride.

Basic stuff: The common wealth should be used for the common good, not to enrich the well-connected few.

Bill (4.00 / 1)
Here is the bill.

Two things: First, the paper is a little misleading as Kirk just signed on to a bill that has been floating around since early June. Second, this isn't exactly just the two of them, it also includes as cosponsors: Bobby Rush (IL-01), Danny Davis (IL-07), Baron Hill (IN-09) and Leonard Boswell (IA-03) among others.

It could make a strong man cry... (0.00 / 0)
or get really angry.  Or both.
