Latest Ins and Outs of IL-18

IL-18 looks to be wide open, especially on the Democratic side, since Ray LaHood's departure made this an open seat and John Sullivan chose to pass. Philosophe Forum brought us some of the early names to come out: Sue Myerscough and former State Rep. Bill Edley (blueollie is big on Edley). Carl passed along the possibility that Dick Versace might run as well. Peoria attorney Patricia Benassi was also in and out while we were looking elsewhere. Now things are starting to shake out further...

First, Circuit Court judge Richard Grawey is looking very much like a candidate. He has dropped his role as chief judge of the 10th Circuit to explore the possibility of a run. (He'll have to drop his judgeship all together if he does run.) Seems like a big move if he wasn't seriously considering.

Sue Myerscough, on the other hand, has decided against a run.

"I'm running for retention," Myerscough, a Springfield Democrat, said Tuesday. "My heart's in being a judge."

Myerscough said she received "quite a bit of encouragement" to run for Congress in Illinois' 18th District, where U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood, R-Peoria, is not seeking another term. She said she was "very honored to be considered," but decided that being a judge is a better fit.

"People elected me to do this," she said. "This is what I enjoy doing. I take this position very seriously. I hope to continue in this position."

The most interesting thing about the article though isn't that Myerscough decided not to run, but rather how involved the DCCC has already been. They spoke with Myerscough before her decision not to run (who said that she came away from the meeting thinking that IL-18 was more winnable than she thought) and have also reportedly spoken with Edley and Grawey. It's clear the DCCC thinks that this district can be in play.

Is to drive Aaron Schock's disapproval above 1 percent.

apparently SEIU likes Schock (0.00 / 0)
pretty well.

how about Alexis Khazzam's relationship with Schock (0.00 / 0)
In this culture of corruption, I don't think all of the Peoria reporters are going to look the other way and not examine Khazzam's campaign contribution, followed by his hiring of Schock for was it $75k to help run the Bradley University business inucbator.  Project Springboard!  It will be interesting to see if any reporters will connect the dots and follow all the money trails in search of a story.

LaHood (4.00 / 1)
LaHood is saying (of course) that if his son runs he's behind him "one thousand percent". If Darin LaHood gets in the race it could get nasty for the Republicans.

Isn't that the DCCC's job? (0.00 / 0)
To find ways of convincing good candidates to run in all congressional districts?

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they are doing it.  And I hope that one of these candidates takes this seat.

One of them (4.00 / 1)
It is one of their jobs, but it is one that I think that they are least successful at. In any case, the bigger thing isn't the recruitment, it's that they are appear ready to actively support the candidate in IL-18...

An 'Independent-Minded Fella' on C-Span (0.00 / 0)
LaHood remains quite contented in his cluelessness.
The Peoria Republican will be the guest for Q&A, a new interview series with C-SPAN president and CEO Brian Lamb. During the hourlong show, which was taped about a month ago after LaHood announced he will retire in January 2009, he discusses controversy surrounding elected officials, corruption, current issues and what may happen with his congressional seat.

[. . .] The program will air on C-SPAN at 7 and 10 p.m. today and a third time at 5 a.m. Monday.
