New Footlik chant: Beltway! Beltway!

as you may know, congresswoman jan schakowsky (il-09) attended a town hall meeting tonight on behalf of americans against the escalation in iraq in northbrook, illinois to report on her august 2007 trip to iraq.  what was interesting about this specific town hall meeting was that it was held outside of schakowsky's district in the neighboring congressional district of mark kirk.

the meeting -- reflecting the intense desire of voters in the tenth to talk about the war -- was packed.  but it seems that not all the fireworks were inside.  while about 300 people were inside, about the same number could not enter the hall because of fire department restrictions.  congressional candidate jay footlik was outside, accompanied by his campaign manager.

volunteers and supporters of dan seals surrounded footlik and gave him a rousing reception.  footlik is trying to move back to illinois having been gone for almost two decades.  dan seals, meanwhile, has generated significant grass and netroots support, so it was no surprise that they would surround and shout down footlik.

bored now :: New Footlik chant: Beltway! Beltway!
one seals supporter asked footlik's manager where footlik voted last year (footlik has maintained his voter registration at his mother's house in the 9th congressional district since he left home to go to college).  but the real fireworks exploded when footlik's manager tried to argue about it.  BELTWAY! BELTWAY! went the chant.  BELTWAY! BELTWAY! in response to footlik's negligible ties to the tenth.  BELTWAY! BELTWAY! for another beltway candidate trying to parachute into an illinois district.

congressman kirk was invited to attend this town hall to report on his meeting with george bush and to explain his numerous votes to support the president's iraqi strategy.  it doesn't appear that he was there.  or, if he was there, that he got in (kirk has a reputation for showing up and waiting outside before deciding wether he will attend district events).

welcome to the tenth congressional district, mr. beltway insider.  now you know how much support dan seals and progressive democrats have here.  i'm betting that it seemed like a better idea to run against this netroots leader from your beltway office...

UPDATE:

ellen of the tenth live blogged the town hall meeting.  Great summary of what she observed.  She also has this wrap-up for those (like jay footlik) who couldn't get in...

Seals supporters circulated nominating (0.00 / 0)
petitions and there were clipboards with multiple completed pages.

Heard that some folks couldn't understand how Footlik nor his campaign manager could find the chutzpah to attend an Out of Iraq townhall meeting. It's unclear whether Footlik supports the troops or Bush. To many in the 10th, it's clear that the troops must be supported and they should return home. To Footlik, it's a consultant kind of thing: maybe yes, maybe no....

Kirk was a no show... (0.00 / 0)
and of course never bothered to respond to repeated invitations, including a very public one at his townhall in Palatine.  As I understand it, a Congressman is elected to be the representative in the Federal government who is closest to the people.  What are the people of the 10th District who attended this evening - chopped liver?

Reports are in on the number of people Kirk missed... (0.00 / 0)
Josh Lansdale of AAEI says that 425 people attended the event and at least 300 were turned away. Many of the people turned away were separately addressed by Congresswoman Schakowsky & then went over to Congressman Kirk's office, but it was all shut down and closed up.  I think they left him a calling card or two.

Look! An ad for Footlik at OpenLeft. It's via google so it's entirely the luck of the draw.

Two Dans for the Price of One (4.00 / 1)
Dan Seals and Daniel Biss were inside at the event. I guess Jay arrived too late to get in.

When Aaron mentioned Dan Seals, the house broke out into huge cheers and applause. Dan Seals has always been a solid candidate against the war and would make a great congressman because he will talk to everyone, not just his friends.

Speaking of friends, Mark Kirk has taken to calling ahead whereever he goes in the district and is then surrounded from his car to any locale by a group of women who sort of act like his body guards, body guards against simple discussion and questions. They also threaten and try to strong arm any opposition with police. Problem they have is that Kirk's opposition is not violating the law so the police cannot really do anything (yet, at least until they totally destroy the Constitution). Sad, isn't it?

pretty much out of the advance playbook... (4.00 / 1)
if i were doing oppo on this race, i'd start tracking who his advance crew was, especially getting pics and bios on each of them.  why is this important?  well, the quickest way to throw them off their game is to start using their names.  adding personal information may or may not be warranted...

Chanting? (0.00 / 0)
I didn't see this take place and I was at the event.  Didn't see Bored Now either.  I did see some people politely chatting him up, but it seemed pretty clear that the majority of the crowd was pro Dan Seals.  I think most people we're happy to politely decline him rather than angrily confront him, which really doesn't help either campaign.

i was not there! (0.00 / 0)
fielding reports from people who were.  i think you meant jay footlik, though, not bored now...

I was inside (0.00 / 0)
I didn't see anything like this, but I was inside for the duration by about 6:40pm trying to keep my connection to the hotel wireless network which was not easy at all. It kept going down and I had to re-connect over and over. Josh later told me that the group on the outside was addressed by Rep. Schakowsky and then went over to Kirk's office. He mentioned nothing about Jay and I didn't ask because I had no reason to at that point.

Accuracy, please (2.00 / 2)
I've been quiet for a while, but the beltway bit was way too much.

First, take a look at what ArchPundit posted on DailyKos today as a comment to your cross posting of this diary (http://www.dailykos....):

? BN--I'm not hearing this (0 / 0)
I talked to two folks at the
  event near Jay and his
  campaign manager--and not them---
  who didn't hear or notice
  anything out of the ordinary.
  They chatted with some folks
and such, but it was all polite
  from what I hear.

  I'm supporting Dan too, but
is it possible this wasn't as
  big of demonstration as
  you perceived it to be?
  by ArchPundit.

Then, I learn you have worked for a few Republicans in your time from DemLifer in another comment on the same DailyKos thread:

• Thanks, ArchPundit (0 / 0)
I respect the fact you feel
  Dan will be a better
  representative than Jay and
  we shall agree to disagree
on that.  I have a real
  problem though with reporting
  from hearsay without accurate
  fact checking.  Thanks to
ArchPundit for getting the truth out.

If we want to be taken seriously
as the new media we need to
  check our facts just as
  the mainstream media is required
to do. And, since you worked
for Bob Dole in 1996, George Bush
in 2000 and Saxby Chamblis in
2002, you have work to do to
  develop credibility on our side
  of the fence.
  by DemLifer.

Then, when I read some of the other comments to your post, I realize this less than accurate reporting does a disservice.  Where do people get the idea that Jay is for the war and Dan is not?  Jay and Dan both support a firm schedule for withdrawal from Iraq.  Their positions are similar if not the same.  Never in Dan's 2006 campaign did he advocate an immediate withdrawal from Iraq.

Oh yes, I do support Jay.  Now, I just want to see accurate reporting or we are no better than the people we bash.

the report was accurate... (0.00 / 0)
i never said it was a "big demonstration."

If you look around (4.00 / 3)
All of that was already known here. You are imparting motives that simply aren't there. The people here who know bored now better than those you're quoting have long since moved past this. (And notice that there's no mention of his work for DFA since at least 2005.) That poster is trying to use an ad hominem attack because he doesn't like what he's saying.

If you don't like what bored now is saying, attack his words. He isn't shy about his defense. Attacking him personally does nothing but make you and, by extension, the candidate you represent look petty, ill-informed, and unable to take criticism.
