...and I'm not just talking about a new candidate.

FINALLY, there is some hope that not all is lost in the 11th congressional district.  A couple friends and I were lucky enough to attend the first fundraiser/meeting of the 11th District Democrats on Friday night.  What an amazing night for a couple reasons...

lou6092 :: Finally...some hope in the 11th
The 11th District Democrats meeting was held at Aurelio's Resturant in Frankfort and attracted about 40 or so democrats.  The program was simple:  pizza and soda, a brief talk from a couple of local officials (a Will County board member and a local representative...I'm sorry I don't remember their names), and a brief self-introduction from Jerry WeBer who is "exploring" his options for a run against Jerry WeLLer.  At the end, we were able to ask some questions but Mr. Weber said he was still doing research and getting his website up for a potential launch in September.

I would dare say the event was a success with an interesting mix of people.  This was very exciting for me personally, as a former resident of the 11th district and where my parents still live, to see some many people so jazzed up about people getting organized to start building democratic party infrastructure in the 11th.  Also, there seemed to be a fair amount of people who had been working in the party for years who wanted to come and jump on the bandwagon.

This being said, the SINGLE MOST EXCITING part of this meeting was the fact that the event was organized by a handful of 20-somethings who became so fed up with their district that they decided to actually do something and created the 11th District Democrats.  One of the groups executive committee members - not sure what his actual title is - Nikhil Bhatia posted the notice of the event and spoke briefly at the end of the presentation.  Nikhil talked about the need to  build party infrastructure, about doing more to make a differnece and trying to create a place where candidates who run in the 11th can share the information that they learn after each election so that new people don't have to start from scratch each time.  Smart guy!

I have to say...this is such an exciting development.  I love the fact that here is a group of young adults who are so tired of nothing that they are willing to step in and fill the void.  They were so charged up and seemingly eager to take on the task of starting to organize something in the 11th.  I give those guys credit for putting on a amazing first event!

My only suggestion to them....you should have asked people to donate more money!

Great work and I eagerly wait an invite to your next event!!

I was also at this event (4.00 / 1)
and it was great!  I found out that Nikhil had previously been an intern at 10th Dems, and when he saw the kinds of things they were doing, he knew that was what was needed in the 11th in order to win.  I also had a chance to talk with a fellow northsider on Sunday -- someone who used to live in the district and did a HUGE ammount of work for John Pavich's campaign -- and I was thrilled to find out that he has offered to help them during this organizational phase.

The numbers are there for this seat to be won, the problem is lack of organization and infrastructure.  I know in the area I was working last year there were only two Democratic precinct committeemen for the nine precincts in the township, and when I called them to tell them that a group of folks from Chicago were coming down to spend the day canvassing in some of the other seven precincts, their attitude was basically "Good luck with that."

So, I am hopefull that one of the things this new group will do is to follow the model of Operation Turn DuPage Blue and start working on recruiting a precinct committee person for each precinct.

But yes, to second Lou's report, it was a great event, and it made me very hopeful.

Weber v. Weller (0.00 / 0)
Great, now I've got those crazy "That's Durbin, with a B" commercials running through my head.

"Let's get the 'ell out of Weller, vote Weber instead."  ???

love to see a good Dem defeat Weller.  How he continues to win elections is beyond me.

anyone know how to reach Nikhil Bhatia?  I live in the 11th and would be interested in helping out with future organizing activities.

By the way, we all know how much money Weller can raise.  It seems a little late for a candidate to get into the race now, unless they have a lot of money of their own.

Re; IL-11 (0.00 / 0)
First of all, I want to thank everyone for their kind comments. We were able to turn out 56 people to the event last week- not bad considering we put this together on the fly starting in the middle of the summer. I am looking forward to doing another meeting down in Bloomington later this fall, and LaSalle County later this year.
Unfortunately, I just moved back to school and the Insight people are very backed up with installation requests, hence why I have not yet posted on the event. I promise I will do so soon, but for now you can contact me at nbhatia3@uiuc.edu. I look forward to continuing this conversation!
