LaHood is out

(h/t Philosophe Forum)

Ray LaHood will not run for re-relection in 2008.

U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood will not seek re-election when his term expires in January 2009.

He will announce his retirement Friday at a press conference at his campaign headquarters, his chief of staff Tim Butler said today.

LaHood did not return multiple phone calls for comment.

The decision comes just more than a month after the long-time Republican representative said he would seek an eighth term in Congress and was not going to apply for the Bradley University presidential post. He said in July he would make an official re-election announcement when he begins circulating petitions for candidacy in August.

That only leaves this guy as an announced candidate. (For what it's worth I guess he's a Republican.)

It shouldn't be a surprise after LaHood's latest comments on the congressional Dems.

"[Congressional Democrats have] had a pretty strong quarter," said Rep. Ray LaHood (R-Ill.), who praised [the legislation expanding SCHIP] as "creative" and suggested the homeland security bill would pass overwhelmingly. "The first quarter was not so good, and that's why they're not looking so good in the polls, but this quarter is looking very good for them. They can send their members home crowing about their accomplishments, and they've done it in a bipartisan way, which is exactly what they promised to do," LaHood said.

Democratic candidate (4.00 / 1)
So who's gonna be our horse in this race?

Sullivan? (4.00 / 1)
ArchPundit got from The Politico (take it for what it's worth) that John Sullivan has already approached the DCCC. Sullivan is the State Senator from the 47th district. He also finished 2nd to Phil Hare in the internal Democratic poll to replace Lane Evans in IL-17 in 2006. As far as his positions go, this was the best I could find. ArchPundit says he's "more conservative than I am, but so is the district".

Sullivan is a highly skilled campaigner (0.00 / 0)
He was first elected in 2002 in a GOP district.

Think about that.

Sullivan Is AGAINST... (0.00 / 0)
...Stem Cell Research.

BLECH!

Another Possibility (0.00 / 0)
The other name mentioned was Peoria County State's Attorney Kevin Lyons.
Not sure of his party affiliation though.

Dem (0.00 / 0)
His name came up in 2006 too. Don't know much about him though.

Yes Lyons is a Democrat (0.00 / 0)
Some folks have unfairly tagged him as "catch and release".

But he was the one who didn't want some convict (forget the name) to get the DNA testing that he requested.

That person ended up getting the DNA test, and it IMPLICATED him!

He easily won reelection, but I am not sure as to how popular he'd be district wide.

I wonder (4.00 / 1)
Did anyone think about Bill Edley, the former State Representative and current prison director?  He won an election in a red area, and he is reasonably progressive.

On the Republican side: watch out for Aaron Schock.  He is telegenic, hard working and a good campaigner.

Already Sucking Up to Durbin (0.00 / 0)
The frontrunners have already approached Durbin:
Observers say Republicans could include state Sen. Bill Brady, state Rep. Jim Watson of Jacksonville and 26-year-old state Rep. Aaron Schock of Peoria.

[. . .]

But U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., called the district competitive with LaHood stepping down, saying 2008 appears to be an opportunity for Democrats.

Durbin, the second highest-ranking Senate Democrat, said Peoria County State's Attorney Kevin Lyons and state Sen. John Sullivan of Rushville are among possible candidates.

Whoever's the Dem candidate -- if Schock is the GOP candidate & the Dem still loses, it won't be a pretty sight.  There should be no way a Dem loses to a gay Rep -- an oxymoron.

Schock (0.00 / 0)
hasn't come out and admitted that he is gay, but if he did, I wonder how much it would matter around here.

Depends (0.00 / 0)
It doesn't matter if he's admitted or not.  He is.  Everyone knows it.  He's doing a Rock Hudson.  Doesn't change reality.

Locally -- obviously not much since he's now an elected official.

CD-wide -- I'm thinking quite a bit.

Ask Steve Waterworth.  The man knows IL-18 inside & out.
