"The proposed cuts to Fermilab based programs are a threat to our economy and are based on a flawed understanding of the need for basic, long-term, fundamental research.
"Fundamental science is the bedrock of our technological and competitive progress, and is an inspiration to our children. Fermilab represents a huge investment in America's future.
"Damaging our long-term future as a result of the Bush Administration's failure to plan for our near-term future is not an appropriate response.
"We have to tackle a series of important issues, from energy independence to dealing with global warming, but cutting back on fundamental research is a massive mistake.
Democrats Dan Seals and Jay Footlik are competing hard in the 10th Congressional District's Democratic primary, but they also believe in party unity. They have both pledged that, when the Feb. 5 election is over, they will come together to support the winner in an effort to unseat Republican incumbent Mark Kirk. A statement reportedly agreed to by Seals and Footlik says, "Despite any differences of opinion that may occur between our candidates...the fundamental goal in 2008 is to defeat Mark Kirk."
from capitol fax blog: "Governor Blagojevich scheduled the Special Primary election on February 5th, 2008, Illinois' regularly scheduled primary date, as requested by Rep. Hastert to minimize inconvenience to the voters in the counties in the 14th Congressional District. The Special General Election will be held on March 8th, 2008."
Daniel Biss, a University of Chicago math professor, has raised $51,000 through ActBlue for his 2008 race for the Illinois House. His campaign Web site links donors to ActBlue, where his page features a YouTube video of supporter endorsements.
"By far, this is the easiest way for a small candidate to get started," said Dr. Biss, who estimated that he would need a total of $300,000 to $450,000. "The impact has been enormous, and the Web site becomes a rallying point for activists."
chicago public radio just reported that henry hyde, former congressman of the 6th, has died. current minority leader john bonior verified this for cpr...
Gov. Richardson has made the most headway of any of the Democratic candidates and has doubled his support in New Hampshire since the summer. He is now statistically even with John Edwards and closing in on Senator Obama.
It also featured a nice quote from the Governor:
I have campaigned everywhere, shook so many hands and visited so many New Hampshire towns, Richardson said. I love doing it, but when you see the fruits of your labor producing momentum, that's where I want to be.
Richardson said he thinks voters are making the connection that he's qualified to bring change to the country. What's happening in New Hampshire is they are seeing me as a candidate who has serious experience -- as a governor, as a diplomat and as a secretary of energy, Richardson said. That I've been able to bring change.
Unlike Sen. Clinton, Gov. Richardson definitely represents change. Unlike Sen. Obama (who really bombed in Puerto Rico according to the AP and confirmed by a local source), Gov. Richardson represents experience.
It is also interesting to note that a significant number of New Hampshire voters still have not decided who they will vote for: 47%. Almost half of the votes are still up for grabs. Gov. Richardson's campaign has been emphasizing this for months: No matter what the pundits say, this race is still wide open.
And the Swift-Boating almost begins. The news media has created a genuine blood sport out of politics. Looks like Darth Dick Cheney's Right-Wing FOX News just upped the anty.
Jim Oberweis mailed me not one but two slick, beautiful campaign mailers today. He discusses his bio, his family, and where he stands on the 2nd Amendment, immigration, abortion, taxes and the line item veto. He says, "You deserve to know where I stand."
Nowhere does he mention Iraq. That speaks volumes, too.
