U.S. Senate: Giannoulias, Hoffman or Jackson?

by: Carl Nyberg

Wed Aug 26, 2009 at 11:03:41 AM CDT

(Since there is a new candidate in the race - promoted by BobB)

Sun-Times (Fran Spielman and Carol Marin) reports Chicago Inspector General David Hoffman will run for U.S. Senate in the Democratic primary. This is the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Roland Burris. h/t Rich Miller. Alexi Giannoulias, Cheyle Jackson and Stan Jagla have also announced their candidacies.

Use this thread to comment on the race. In the poll below you can vote for as many candidates as you feel you want. If you could give a sincere recommendation to vote for any of the four, you can vote for all four. I included Roland Burris because he did make a statement that he might re-enter the race.

Stan Jagla? (0.00 / 0)
Really?

Who the heck is Jagla? (0.00 / 0)
I have never heard of him.

a guy whowants to run for U.S. Senate (0.00 / 0)
He's an immigrant guy, lives in DuPage, I think.

I think (0.00 / 0)
he ran, if I remember correctly, for Congress in the 6th CD, and was defeated in the primary? maybe.  His website lists him as being "Independent" until 2007, so maybe he was on the ballot in the General as an Independent in 2006. Either way, he lost dismally in the 6th.

From Bridget's website:

Stan ran against Jill Morganthaler in the 6th in 2008.

The linked story ... is not flattering to Jagla.

Jagla... (0.00 / 0)
..is just a gadfly who has never held public office except I think he may be a PC.  He is failing upwards.  He does not win against Jill he tries for county clerk looses and thinks heis ready for the US senate.  I doubt he will even get enough signatures to get on the ballot.  I think he would have a hard time even getting elected for park board.

I'm a big fan of Hoffman, but, he is untested in (4.00 / 1)
an Aldermanic race, much less statewide.  I'm just surprised that he's thinking Senate, and, with the votes here.  Whoever wins has to get past Kirk.  Does anyone know what his positions are?

working for Boren doesn't give him instant (4.00 / 1)
credibility as a liberal.

But I just checked Giannoulias' web page and there's no issues section. What positions has Giannoulias taken?

[ Parent ]
Giannoulias (4.00 / 1)
when speaking to groups (such as NDFA, but also I saw him speak at a coffee in Evanston), has been very progressive, good government, fiscally responsible, etc.  In terms of tested positions, he certainly stood with labor in the Hartmarx stand-off, threatening to discontinue state business with Wells Fargo if they chose a buyer who would gut the business and/or move the work out of state.

[ Parent ]
Exactly (0.00 / 0)
I like what little I've seen from Giannoulias but I get nervous putting someone into a six year Senate term who has never taken a difficult vote on any issue.  How he'll act in office is anyone's guess.
But with all the money he raised it looks like he'll be the nominee unless a big name like Tom Dart gets into it.

[ Parent ]
That's how I feel (0.00 / 0)
Giannoulias some how got himself into the position of being a credible candidate, shooting out of nowhere.

And that's fine, after all you have to enter the Senate young to get seniority.  But he's so unknown, I just don't know what his positions are, and I can't consider supporting him until I find out.

[ Parent ]
giannoulias (0.00 / 0)
many of my friends and allies are backing giannoulias, but i just fail to see the appeal.  i have talked to him and heard him speak and i can't help but feeling that he is a lightweight and the ethical issues surrounding his banking days worry me.  i'd like to see a good, spirited race and if he wins, more power to him, but i'd love to see some more people jump in.

another 3-4 candidates and then Burris (3.00 / 1)
gets back in the race.

[ Parent ]
Hoffman (0.00 / 0)
Hoffman is going to get a reality check when he has to gather 10,000 signatures to get on the ballot (actually 20-25,000 to account for the challenges to his signers) AND raise $5-$8million dollars for a primary AND general election WITHOUT foot soldiers that he fought so hard to put in jail while inspector general.

He was a media hore who did nothing his first 3 years on the job and then all of a sudden gets real busy in his last year because he knew he wanted to run for office.

However since Madigan stayed as Attorney General, he was too chicken to take her on.

I guess you never worked vice defense, because... (0.00 / 0)
then you would have learned to spell "Whore".

Spelling (1.00 / 3)
When all else fails and you have no other argument, pick on the spelling.

BTW - not knowing if this site had a filter for what would be considered "offensive language" was the reason for using a phonetic spelling of the word "whore" - so that I would not have to type it over again.  Same as when I would call you an "azz" for posting such a "stewpid" response.  Get it ?

You must be one of Hoffman's metro-sexual, down-low (look up the terminology under street vernacular) colleagues.

[ Parent ]
So which candidate are you supporting? (3.00 / 1)
Experience on this site has been that good words about your candidate are far more effective than bad words about the opposition. Especially over-the-top bad words.

Slim pickings (0.00 / 0)
Not impressed with any of the Dems:

Cheryl Jackson appears to be running on a platform of "I am Black" and has Blago taint;

Alexi has serious baggage with the family bank lending money to mobsters and the losses incurred with the College Savings program and using the College Savings program money to buy new SUV's for staff;

Hoffman is a self serving hypocrite that used the media and his office to jump to political office;

As a lifelong Dem it pains me to say I will be voting for Mark Kirk in November 2010, if he makes it out of the primary.

As for the February 2010 primary, I will still pull a Democrat ballot and hold my nose and vote for Ms. Jackson as the lesser of three evils.

[ Parent ]
Because Mark Kirk (4.00 / 3)
is better?  A man who has consistently lied about his "moderate" record while fulfilling his duties as majority whip -- back in the day when the Republicans were in the majority -- to bully the entire Republican caucus to vote in lockstep with George Bush? Really?  And let's not forget his little peccadillo of allowing his campaign staff to twitter in his name while he was on active duty, a violation of military rules.

I'd rather have any of 3 Dems that that hypocrite, even with all their baggage.

[ Parent ]
you are not a real... (4.00 / 1)
..Democrat if you vote for Kirk.  If you must then don't vote but voting for Kirk makes you a republican.

Oh, I have an opinion about your comment, that I could argue, ... (0.00 / 0)
and, it's probably not the one you think, but, I'm guessing from your 'argument' here, it's wasted on you.

knock-off the homophobic BS (3.50 / 2)
Don't like Hoffman? Fine.

Engaging in personal attacks? Not OK.

Using homophobic language? Also not OK.

[ Parent ]
I can see how you might think we have a language filter on the site (0.00 / 0)
because folks here about hardly ever use inappropriate language. And when we do use such words it is often very considered and quite conscious.

i never use inappropriate language???? (0.00 / 0)
i knew living in the midwest for a decade would damage my reputation.

my best story so far this cycle: i had a kitchen cabinet person for a campaign express concern that i was too liberal (she, with all the reformer/progressive credentials you could think of) and offered that i'd have to stop blogging if i took the job (she didn't know that i don't blog about who i work for, unless i set up an attack blog under another nym).  who here thinks i'm too liberal?

that's what i thought, too...

well... (0.00 / 0)
neo-liberals and neo-conservatives are kinda birds of a feather. The classic phrase of "fascism with a human face" describes the difference.

The "too label" they needed is probably "too progressive". You have very strong anti-war beliefs and your consciousness of color is also very strong. Further the phrase "some of my best friends are x" as a way of describing racists was very often applied to liberals, certainly back in the 60's and 70's.

So she probably thought (actually correctly) that your anti-liberal bias was from the progressive rather than the authoritarian direction.

I'm struggling to make sense here. I think I'm getting close. ;-)

Jacob Meister, an atty., has just jumped in. (0.00 / 0)
Anybody know anything about him?

This is his site: (4.00 / 1)

Seems more like an alternative to Hoffman, (4.00 / 1)
IYAM.

Although it's possible to suspect this may be an attempt to divide the potential Hoffman vote.

Is Giannoulias Senator? Aren't they all running against... (0.00 / 0)
each other?

[ Parent ]
My point is ... (0.00 / 0)
that Meister is clearly framing his argument as an attack on Giannoulias. Presumably he, like everyone else, considers Giannoulias the obvious front-runner, and being a front-runner has many of the same advantages and drawbacks as being an incumbent. Technically, of course, incumbent or not every candidate is running against all the others.

Attacking Giannoulias? (0.00 / 0)
Maybe he's running against "politicians" like he said (from http://www.bnd.com/326/story/9...

"Jackson plans to formally announce her campaign next week and Meister said he'll follow suit in the coming weeks. Jackson welcomed Hoffman to the race, while Meister took issue with Hoffman's Democratic credentials because he once clerked for the late Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist, who was nominated to the court by President Nixon and became chief justice under President Reagan. Giannoulias' campaign declined to comment."

When I read this paragraph I see "politician talk" by Jackson and Giannoulias. I see Hoffman as a "politician" that; 1) would sell his ideological soul for his resume; or 2) is hiding his Blue Dog Democrat/neo-con credentials.

Sorry, I don't like either answer. If he wanted experience working for judges there are plenty of progressive judges, representatives, and senators looking for good minds. So why did he work only for a Blue Dog Senator and two radically conservative judges -- Jacobs and Rehnquist?

A true believe doesn't even send their resume to Jacobs and Rehnquist. As Alan So here's the truth about Chief Justice Rehnquist you won't hear on Fox News or from politicians. Chief Justice William Rehnquist set back liberty, equality, and human rights perhaps more than any American judge of this generation. His rise to power speaks volumes about the current state of American values.

A true believe doesn't send their resume to Jacobs or Rehnquist. As Alan Dershowitz wrote on The Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alan-dershowitz/telling-the-truth-about-c_b_6844.html/.

"So here's the truth about Chief Justice Rehnquist you won't hear on Fox News or from politicians. Chief Justice William Rehnquist set back liberty, equality, and human rights perhaps more than any American judge of this generation. His rise to power speaks volumes about the current state of American values."

Well someone who's running for office did say it today. Paul Wellstone was the same -- just an average guy who spoke truth to power -- and won.

Here's another hint for you -- a true progressive never quotes Dershowitz.

I don't agree with Dershowitz very often but (0.00 / 0)
what did Dershowitz say that was inaccurate? Besides, who would you rather defend Dershowitz or Rehnquist?

lmao - nice try (0.00 / 0)
My only question for you is do you also go by the name Deparvid, the guy who has been vandalizing Hoffman's WP article?

Just hope you were smart enough not to post this obvious oppo research from Giannoulias HQ, or you boys are going to have a minor scandal on your hands.  IP addys can be traced, ya know, and WP takes a dim view of those who screw around with articles about living persons.

[ Parent ]
I don't get your point. (0.00 / 0)
Oppo research? Vandalizing a WIKI page? WOW!

I don't know much about how WIKI works but I always thought that WIKI was a community effort. People could add information as long as it was true. Yeah I know -- free-speech sucks. I never knew that living persons owned their WIKI articles. I guess that's like a living person getting to write their own entry in the Encyclopaedia Britannica and then after they die we can tell the truth about him/her.

Geez, I thought only the Republicans motivate people with fear.

[ Parent ]
Well if I based... (4.00 / 2)
...my descision on how many google ads the NRSC is running against someone then I would Guess Alexi is the top dog in the race so far.  At least the Republicans think so.
