Pelosi's announcement a bit back that health care without a public option was a non-starter because of opposition from Progressive Caucus members. It brought a smile to my face when I read it. Damn, I thought, it's about time progressives in congress actually used the same tactics that the Blue Dogs use all the time so successfuly.

So now Bowers at OpenLeft and FireDogLake have begun a process to formalize the tactic. Specifically FDL has created the action spreadsheet presented below. Actually theirs includes all of the progressive members of congress whereas I've only included the members that appear in our House Vote roundup locally. The page linked also includes the ability to tell them about any results you may get from calling these progressive members and asking them to committ to the process for the health care public option.

Phil Hare now Committed (0.00 / 0)
After I called the six members from Illinois, Dave Meyer, the FireDogLake person working on the project saw my reponses and sent me two links to Rep Hare's video. You'll probably see this one on Progress Illinois. FDL suggests using the wording of "take the pledge," but I asked them to stand behind Speaker Pelosi's statement. So my reporting to FDL resorted to "leans yes" unless the staff person was tentative or said they would have to transfer my call. Then I reported "no position."

Of course, not living in their districts and not have been a contributor to their campaigns, I was tentative myself!

There are a few members in the Progressive Caucus to whom I have contributed a number of times, so I plan to call two out-of-state reps, hoping my past support for them will carry some weight.

thanks for keeping up with that... (0.00 / 0)
i checked back with the FDL chart yesterday and i couldn't discern any changes, which i thought a bit unusual.  glad to see some movement...
