bill foster opens up the special election campaign with a sharp broadside at the ice cream man over iraq.  foster began his campaign saying that his top three issues were iraq, iraq and iraq and he's making getting out of iraq central to his campaign for congress.

Awsome commercial... (4.00 / 1)
It is inspiring to see a Democrat take the fight to the Republicans.

To bad I have satellite and won't ever see this beyond YouTube.

I don't know (0.00 / 0)
It's aggressive. I like playing offense. But, I wonder if this does not give Oberweis the ability to claim the high ground, and call Foster on flip flopping on his claim to end the partisan bickering. It does not fit with his previous campaign themes that he work across the isle, but instead contradicts everything he's been running on by being openly partisan. There's no inspiration here. It's pure partisanship and a clear negative ad. That's going to be the headline: Foster goes negative.

Regardless of the power of this ad, leading with a negative ad just worries me. And I'm usually pretty aggressive. I think strategically this is a mistake that will allow Oberweis to be the good guy in this race. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Since Oberweis is not, in fact, a good guy... (0.00 / 0)
...I don't think this will hurt anything.  Oberweis went negative on Lauzen; he's bound to do it with Foster.  (It was hard, of course, to mount a negative campaign against Lauzen since Lauzen has never actually done anything one way or another in his 15 years.)  But he will have a lot to attack Foster with, since Foster, as a Democrat, represents satan and Islam.

Somehow I think that Oberweis will simply end up whatever McCain is going to start throwing on the presidential side.  The GOP is going to try to attack the whole party.

Omnes vulnerant, postuma necat

given the proximity of the special election... (0.00 / 0)
that rule of thumb doesn't really apply.  foster already opened with his positive, biographical ad.  the compressed nature of the special elections mean that this is much more like the places (eg, florida) where the primary and general elections are weeks from each other.  the ad cycle is just one continuous wave for those who can afford it.

and, given oberweis' staff, you can be assured that he will go negative on foster.  that's the basis of their other campaigns, anyway...

"We have a lot of kids on the ground acting like adults and we have a lot of adults in this room acting like kids," President Obama told his advisors about all the infighting

Good point (0.00 / 0)
But I'd still rather lead positive, then respond immediately counterpunch style to remain in the roll as the positive one who has been wronged. But you're right about the short timeframe.

Negative? (4.00 / 1)
I don't see it that way.

Foster's sticking to the issue and highlighting a difference between himself and Oberweis using a statement of Obie's that everybody's heard already. It's no secret and Obie seems to be proud of his position.

How would you have done it differently? Just left Oberweis out of it, you mean?

I think... (4.00 / 1)
...that ANYONE can afford to beat the hell out of Oberweis. And Bill Foster has such a measured, rational, even somewhat reserved tone when he does it. He says it like a concerned father and it works!

I love the ad. I think it gets the point across without being shrill.

Gee Bridget. Who's your daddy? n/t (1.50 / 2)

Huh? (0.00 / 0)
I don't even know where to go with that comment. All in good fun or being a jerk? I have no idea.

At any rate, I am a Bill Foster supporter.

looks to me (4.00 / 2)
like he's taking a page from the blago playbook and (simultaneously) trying to do to the republican what they always try to do to us.

Foster is defining oberweiss right out of the gate.

Oberweiss = 10 more years in Iraq.

That's what the voter will take from this ad.

+1 in the Foster column.

Remember, blago went negative immediately and hard on Topinka, and he destroyed her.  Republicans love going negative early on us.

It's about time we hit back.

And note that the ad says "DEMOCRAT for Change" (emph added).

I love the use of the Democrat.  Builds the brand.  Helps build the idea that Democrats mean out of Iraq.  Good for the party as a whole.

Right! (0.00 / 0)
Define or be defined! Oberweis has such a bad track record as a nutjob. It won't be hard to tap into that.

Fabulous Commercial (4.00 / 3)
Nothing like tying the Bush albatross to Oberweis'neck.  I hope Mr. Foster has an economic commercial coming down the pike too.  Everyone has had a good point in this discussion.

Bill's gonna play hardball in this one.... (4.00 / 1)
...the only way to win it. George W. Oberweis.

a little off topic, but.. (0.00 / 0)
with the way dur weisser slagged Lauzen (apparently with the full backing of the fat boy from Plano, who is going to be looking for something to do now that being a delegate for mitt is sorta, wha..dead?), it seems that the repugs have put Lauzen on the shelf for good in Illinois; anyone running against him would simply bring up Obie's charges, and that would be about that.

I wonder..how to get the republicans who supported Lauzen, and are disgusted with Obie..to lean..this... a.. way..in March..and obviously..November. I think there's quite a few of them who would never consider voting for Oberweis.

so..not only do we see the challenge of getting JL's people to move it on over..but also to pull the lauzen de-campers.

should be fun.

Well, I can tell you... (0.00 / 0)
...that your idea about attracting Lauzen supporters is dead on. The Foster campaign gets this, too.

Frankly, Lauzen is beaten about the head and shoulders enough by the local GOP that I can't see his diehard supporters supporting Oberweis.
